Everyone I've spoken to about E85 has told me that, while it's less expensive than gasoline, your MPG go way down when running it.
Has anyone experienced this and what is your opinion?

E85 has about 27% less energy than gasoline, but reports on reduction in fuel economy vary widely - from 10 to 25%, depending on the vehicle, driver, weather, road conditions, etc. The University of Washington uses ethanol in their fleet and may have a "real life" experience they could add to this forum.

Just a quick addition to the previous comment - ethanol does provide 27% less energy per gallon than gasoline, but ethanol is cheaper and often saves you money. To compare the full cost of these two fuels, use the conversion factor (1.41) from DOE. Just multiply the price of ethanol by the conversion factor to compare it to gasoline. As of April 2009, the national average price for E85 was $1.88 per gallon and $2.88 per gallon for gasoline, so the equation is: $1.88 * 1.41= $2.65.
According to today’s prices, E85 is actually $0.23 cheaper than gasoline. You also get the greenhouse gas benefits from E85: 19% to 52% for corn based ethanol depending on the source of energy during fuel production.
